A frequent participant in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Andrew Blasi, Jr., is the director of Crowell and Moring International LLC in Washington, DC. Andrew Blasi draws on over a decade of experience providing guidance for development and management of the multi-sectoral partnership, and is dedicated to contributing to strengthening business ethics and integrity around the world. In March 2020, he was interviewed by the Washington Examiner regarding the commercial and economic impacts of COVID-19.

The effects of the pandemic have varied by country. Mr. Blasi noted that as of mid-March, Japan had an estimated 29 deaths and 924 cases. However, according to Forbes, as of August 4, 2020, over 1,000 citizens of the island nation had died and over 41,000 people had been diagnosed. Japan is currently home to over 126 million people. Even with the increase in cases, however, many regions in Japan are currently showing signs of economic recovery. Whether these trends continue remains to be seen.

During the discussion, Mr. Blasi pointed out that since it was a foregone conclusion that the pandemic would result in significant economic contraction, the most important question was when and to what extent an economic rebound would occur. He also said the length of the pandemic would determine its ultimate impact on the economy and trade in the United States and around the world. Unfortunately, that question remains unanswered.
